CHIPPEWA FALLS. Listed on the National Register of Historic places, Chippewa Falls' Cook-Rutledge Mansion stands as one of the state's best remaining examples of High Victorian-Italianate architecture. The home, which was completed in 1873, has been occupied by a veritable who's who of Chippewa Valley high society, including Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor James Monroe Bingham, lumber baron Edward Rutledge (who oversaw an extensive renovation on the home in the 1880s), and Judge Dayton Cook. Today, those who visit the stately, redbrick home are awed by 19th century extravagance: hand-carved woodwork, priceless crystal chandeliers, silver doorknobs, and beautiful stained-glass windows. Special group tours are available.

CHIPPEWA FALLS. For more than a century, this old brick Victorian, which is listed on the national Registry of Historic Places, has played a prominent role in the community of Chippewa Falls. Operating as everything from a saloon to a boarding house to a restaurant, the house has entertained generations of locals and travelers in its time. Today, after undergoing a major facelift, the home is once again in its prime. Decorated with antique furnishings and serving up delicious traditional American fare, the James Sheeley House offers one of the area's more unique dining experiences.

DOWNTOWN. Maintained by the Chippewa Valley Museum, this cozy home was built by Herman and Augusta Schlegelmilch in 1871, the year before Eau Claire was incorporated as a city. In those days, most of the buildings in Eau Claire were made of wood, and fires frequently ravaged the young community. One blaze even claimed the Schlegelmilch's hardware store. Thus, when the family decided to build their new home, they used brick in the hopes that it would survive the next fire. Members of the family lived here until the 1970s, and some of the original furniture still decorates the home, offering the public a brief glimpse of what life was like for Eau Claire's 19th-century well-to-do.

MENOMONIE. The historic Mabel Tainter Theater, a listed building, offers an engaging look into Menomonie's past, its ornate Victorian-era architecture featuring regal white archways, brass fixtures, leaded glass windows, rich walnut and mahogany walls, and intricate, hand-carved woodwork. The theater also boasts a rare (and working) Steere and Turner tracker pipe organ. Performances vary from season to season, ranging from operas and classical concerts to children's theater and off-Broadway shows.
