NORTHWEST CHARLESTON. The Drayton family has welcomed guests to Charleston, SC and the plantation's beautiful setting since 1676. Home to the oldest public gardens in America, this former rice plantation continues to welcome visitors for a guided tour of the furnished 1873 home that is the third to stand on this site. The four slave cabins on the plantation also tell the history of those who lived and worked here from the 1670s to the 1960s.

Most of the original structures were burned during Sherman's raid, but the 1755 red-brick guest wing still remains, as does a sugarcane mill and working stable. Gift shop and restaurant on-site.

MONCKS CORNER. Once home to a rice plantation known as Dean Hall, this antebellum estate is 25 minutes from Charleston, SC. The plantation's fallow rice fields are now home to towering cypress trees, picturesque swamps and gorgeous gardens fed by the freshwater reserve that made Dean Hall one of the legendary Cooper River rice plantations. The plantation was established about 1720, and the original house was dismantled and moved by a former owner in the 1970s.
