CHAMPAIGN. Housed in one of the region's oldest standing commercial buildings (the historic Cattle Bank), this museum is dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of Champaign County. Special exhibits change seasonally, and permanent holdings include an outstanding collection of handmade quilts and a working 1919 Cretor popcorn wagon that often makes appearances at downtown events.

URBANA. To gain a better international perspective while visiting Champaign-Urbana, stop by this well-respected institution, which falls under the auspices of the University of Illinois. Cultures from around the globe have contributed to the Spurlock's 46,000-item collection of artifacts, which range from a casting of a frieze at the Parthenon to Merovingian bronzes to objects representing the ancient cultures of North, Central and South America. An invaluable learning experience, to be sure.

MAHOMET. Curious about the history of Central Illinois? The best place to quench your thirst for knowledge is this two-level facility in nearby Lake of the Woods Park. As you stroll through the museum you'll find a replica of a traditional blacksmith's shop, an original John Deere Buggy, and a large exhibit called "Life on the Prairie," which chronicles Native American and early European experiences in this region. For younger visitors, there's the Discovery Room, where kids can experience early prairie life first-hand.
