Harrisburg began around 1710 as a trading post called Harris Ferry. By 1785, a streetscape had been laid out by John Harris, Jr., the son of the founder of Harris Ferry. Even though the government did not relocate to Harrisburg until 1810, his original plans did include the land for a state capitol.
