Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump A UNESCO World Heritage Site just 160km south of Calgary. One of the oldest, largest and best preserved buffalo jumps in North America, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is known around the world as a place where history meets prehistory in a story more than 5500 years old. If you are lucky enough to visit on a Wednesday in July or August, you’ll be treated to a spectacular dance performance on the plaza with live Blackfoot drumming and singing featuring some of the best Native dancers in Western Canada. Drumheller and the Royal Tyrell Museum Take the scenic drive from Calgary to the badlands of the Red Deer River Valley and visit the finest dinosaur museum in the world. Just 125 km from Calgary, Drumheller is home to the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology where visitors can trace 3.5 billion years of the earth's history through the fossil records on display. From the Burgess Shale exhibit to the amazing T-Rex skull to the preparation lab where you can watch as technicians uncover their latest finds, there is something for everyone to discover. Bar U Ranch National Historic Site Discover the rich history of ranching in Southern Alberta with a visit to Bar U Ranch just 100 km south of Calgary. Once one of the largest cattle ranches in Alberta at over 150,000 acres and home to more than 10,000 cattle and 800 horses, the Bar U tells the story of how the west once was. From its beginnings in the 1880's through to the 1950's, the Bar U has a colorful history which is told by the wandering interpreters you'll encounter as you tour the site. Open from May 24 through September 30, the Bar U site includes over 235 historic buildings, a Visitor Orientation Center which houses a reception area, a Range Land exhibit, a theatre featuring the site's award-winning history video: The Mighty Bar U, Pekisko Creek General Store and the Bar U Ranch Roadhouse Restaurant. The Wool Tour While there is no denying that Alberta is cattle country, there are two unique sheep-based establishments just north of the city that will have you thinking more about warm woolen mittens than Alberta beef. Custom Woolen Mills is the only complete wool-processing plant in operation in western Canada. Open for self guided tours Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm, Custom Woolen Mills is a working museum where wool is processed on machinery dating back to the 1880's. From there, take the short drive to PaSu Farm, a working farm also featuring a boutique and one of the best restaurants between Calgary and Edmonton!
