BISMARCK. Known as the "Skyscraper on the Prairie," the North Dakota's State Capitol towers over the city Bismarck like a proud parent. Completed in 1933, this Art Deco-style structure stands 19 stories and serves as a gateway of sorts between the state's past, present, and future. Also featured on the State House grounds are an arboretum garden and trail and a collection of statues that includes a bronze Sakakawea and the quintessential pioneer family.

BISMARCK. Constructed in 1884, this lovely Victorian-style mansion served as the state governor's primary residence from 1893 to 1960. Open to the public as a historic house-museum since the mid-70s, the home was carefully restored and now looks much as did during its political heyday. Antique furnishings and personal effects left by the 21 families who lived here, including portraits and an exquisite Steinway piano purchased during the John Burke's term as governor.

BISMARCK. Known for several years as Ward Earthlodge Village, this site marks the spot of an 18th century Mandan village. Situated atop a high hill that overlooks the Missouri River, this small village was once contained several dwellings that were surrounded by fortifications. Of course, those visiting the site will have to use their imagination, as all that's left of those structures are the indentations in the ground where they used to be. Several markers have been placed throughout the site to identify certain structures and their importance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

BISMARCK. One of the area's more unique historical attractions, this reconstructed pioneer village boasts more than 20 buildings that date as far back as the late 19th century. The site, which includes some 20 acres, is a perfect place to bring families or school groups to learn about life in North Dakota before the introduction of TV, video games, the telephone, and even running water. Also on the premises is a recreated coal mining camp.

BISMARCK. Dating from, perhaps, as far back as the late 16th century, Double Ditch was a thriving Mandan village until around 1781. Lewis and Clark made some of the first modern references to the then-deserted village in their 1806 journals, when their expedition ran across it while traveling through North Dakota. The earth lodge village takes it name from the two dry moats that surround it, a feature that distinguishes it from other Native American villages of its time-period. Interpretative markers scattered throughout the site help visitors "see" what the village may have once looked like. Located just over 10 miles north of Bismarck.

BISMARK. All that remains today of Camp Hancock is the old log headquarters building, which now serves as an interpretative museum and whose exterior log walls have been covered with a protective clapboard siding. Founded in 1872 as Camp Greely, the military settlement was started with one solitary purpose in mind: to provide protection for the crews then working on laying the lines for the Northern Pacific Railroad. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

MANDAN. Located off Highway 1806, Fort Abraham Lincoln can trace its roots all the way back to the late 18th century, when a fur-trading outpost was set up here. When the army took over the reins of the fort in the 1870s, they renamed it honor of the nation's sixteenth president. Modern guests to the fort will find that it looks much as it did in 1876, when an ambitious General George A. Custer led 250 men west toward Little Big Horn and infamy. Also within the confines of the state park is On-a-Slant Indian Village, where a fortified village of earthen lodges has been carefully reconstructed to resemble one of the area's earliest major settlements.

MANDAN. Located within the boundaries of one of North Dakota's most popular state parks, On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village dates from the late 16th century, when a group of Mandan constructed and fortified a village on a peninsula carved into the west bank of the Missouri River. The Mandan prospered in their walled village for some 200 years, enjoying the protection of the river to the east and high log wall to the east. In fact, On-a-Slant was one of the region's top trading posts for several years, seeing everything from guns and metalwork to horses and crops pass through its walls. Sadly, the Mandan were forced to abandon the village in 1781 due to a small pox epidemic.

FORT CLARK. Founded in the 1830s, Fort Clark served as one of the primary fur-trading outposts on the upper Missouri until the early 1960s, allowing representatives of the American Fur Company to work exclusively with the native Mandan. The Fort Clark site has remained remarkably preserved of the years, and it stands as one of the state's most important collection of historical landmarks, containing numerous depressions left by the homes, buildings, and grave sites that once comprised Fort Clark and nearby Primeau's Post. Also found on the grounds are the remnants of a Mandan village that was decimated by a smallpox virus brought by steamboats in the 1830s.

FORT YATES. Situated on the western boundary of Fort Yates some two miles west of Highway 1806 is the burial site of the legendary Sioux leader, who was killed by authorities during the Ghost Dance Unrest of 1890. Sadly, there is little here to commemorate this noble warrior save for an inscribed boulder. Sitting Bull's "official" burial site is now in Mobridge, SD, where his body was moved several years after its original interment.
